Roll of the Dead

14th North Carolina Regiment

"Not for fame or reward;
Not for place or rank;
Not lured by ambition, or goaded by necessity;
But in simple obedience to duty, as they understood it,
These men suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all - and died."

The above inscription appears on the north side of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy monument to Confederate soldiers
in Arlington National Cemetery. It was written by the Reverend Dr.
Randolph McKim. He delivered the invocation at both the laying of the
cornerstone in 1912 and again at the unveiling in 1914.
